Everyone settled in and Dickie, having apparently calmed down a bit, started making sandwiches for everyone. Mike was trying get Ashley a drink, but we didn't seem to have anything handy that she liked, so he left for a few minutes to go hunt down whatever it was that she wanted.
âSo,â Chris started. âWhat's your story, Ash?â
âAshley.â She corrected him meekly without looking directly at him.
âI know, but Ash is a cool zombie name â Like from Evil Dead.â Ashley just looked blankly at Chris so he continued. âYou know, Bruce Campbell?â Still blank. âOk â Ashley. What's your story?â
âI don't really have one. I was staying with my friend Heather and she left and never came back,â Ashley answered.
âWhere'd she go?â Buddha joined in.
âShe went to check on her parents. I told her not to go, that the phones probably weren't working, but she didn't listen, and I haven't seen her for days.â She relaxed just a micron.
âWell, how did you end up with Mike?â Chris asked before taking a guy sized bite out of his sandwich.
âI had a sign in the window, and when I saw him driving by I waved to get his attention,â she said.
âWhere were you and your friend planning to go?â asked Clark.
âI don't know,â she answered and looked down.
âWell, what did you do before?â Buddha asked, keeping things casual.
âI was studying to be a CNA,â she said.
âSo you're a nurse?â Dickie asked.
âUm, no. I had just started the course. We hadn't got to nursing or anything yet. It was mostly records,â she answered.
âWell, what else did you do?â Buddha asked.
âI worked for a housekeeping company. I was in line to be a manager,â she stated.
âWell, good.â Clark said. âYou can help us keep this place livable.â
âWell, I really only did offices. Vacuum, dust and windows. I didn't do dishes or laundry or anything,â she offered.
âCan you cook?â Clark asked.
âIf it comes out of a box or can be microwaved. I can microwave better than Betty Crocker,â she said with her first bit of confidence.
âNo power, no microwave, Betty.â Clark stood up. âC'mon boys. Let's get up on the roof and check the mess.â
We shoved our sandwiches down and squeezed beer into the remaining spaces to wash it down.
âWe'll be back down in a bit,â Buddha said as he walked away.
Up on the roof we discovered that Clark used the proper term. Mess. There was a definite increase in the Lot Lizard community. Most of them were on MLK Blvd., but more had gathered near the garden center turned parking garage. Fortunately, they weren't trying to get in. They were just milling about the area. Our little trip served a few purposes it would seem. We got to see that in both directions everything was just as bad off as it was here. We got to test and find the limits of a truck against a meat wall. We discovered Mike had a thing for a damsel in distress, and we managed to attract more Dead Heads to the concert and got them a bit better organized.
